A66 ‘Through-about works’, Middlesbrough

A E Yates Ltd. continue work on the A66 ‘through-about’ at the busy junction with Cargo Fleet Lane on behalf of Middlesbrough Borough Council.

Both the A66 / A171 Cargo Fleet Through about and the Cargo Fleet Lane / South Bank Road junction opened to traffic on Sunday 30th August; with high mast lighting works programmed for completion on Friday 18th September.

Overnight closures will continue both East and Westbound on the A66 from Monday 14th to Friday 18th September in order to carry out these high mast column works safely; these closures will be in place from 8pm to 6am, with diversion routes clearly signposted.

Overview: The A66 is the busiest east-west route in the Borough, with the section immediately to the west of the Cargo Fleet junction carrying around 50,000 vehicles on a typical weekday.

As well as serving the town centre, the A66 plays a key strategic role in connecting the A19 and A1(M) Trunk Roads to the west. The A171 Cargo Fleet Lane is one of the Borough’s busiest north-south routes, serving east Middlesbrough and linking the town centre with Guisborough, Whitby and Scarborough.

The contract involves the conversion of a roundabout into a hamburger roundabout with new through route allowing the bulk of the current traffic to travel straight on – works include site clearance, excavation works, earthworks, ducting, kerbing, carriageway reconstruction & resurfacing, safety barriers & guards, improvements to existing footway and construction of new footways & cycleways, street lighting, construction of reinforced concrete wall.
