Overview

Bury New Road Junction, Salford

The aim of the improvement work is to make this junction safer and more convenient to get around by foot or cycling.

The existing junction does not have traffic signal-controlled crossing points on all arms and is problematic for pedestrians and cyclists that are trying to cross at pedestrian crossings. Key interventions for the junction improvement works includes:

• To remove the two existing triangular islands and build out the footways for the new junction layout.
• Alteration to the staging at the junction, with the key change for drivers being that Moor Lane and Singleton Road will run together and right turning drivers will have to give way.
• A signal-controlled pedestrian crossing with push button facilities is proposed across all arms of the junction and introduction of an ‘all red’ stage for pedestrians.
• Street Lighting improvements at the junction with some tree pruning to ensure lighting is unobstructed.

A.E.Yates are proud to have been instrumental in the delivery of this scheme which in addition to providing much needed traffic congestion relief also leaves a lasting legacy.
• Large improvement on capacity of busy existing junctions.
• The local workforce hired for the job gained invaluable training and development in the sector providing additional skills to the region and providing a positive economic benefit.
• Reduced waiting times for rush hour periods. Working windows of 09:30 – 15:30

Added value and Lessons Learned

• Great coordination with local public. Arranging temporary pedestrian crossing points to go on automatically on Saturdays so the Jewish community can cross safely without the use electrical devices, which is part of their Sabbath.
• Great collaboration with Salford City FC to liaise weekend closure traffic management around match day schedules to limit disruption to the surrounding area.
• Public engagement – Regularly talking to the public about works, especially with parents and children walking to school.
P• Social value work – AEY constructed a new access ramp for local Cheetham Hill Sports Club to allow full access into their club house and changing facilities, which was previously only accessible via stairs.
