Working in partnership with A&H Construction, the team successfully delivered a comprehensive ground improvement scheme for 22 commercial units in Birmingham. The site conditions required a careful and methodical approach due to the presence of dense heterogeneous made ground of variable depth, and the requirement to achieve the specified bearing capacity and settlement performance beneath main foundations and ground bearing floor slabs.
Our team at Tritech Ground Engineering (TGE) opted to implement a vibro stone column ground improvement system, utilising two installation rigs supported by two pre-bore rigs. This method allowed us to efficiently install a total of 5,147 columns, ranging in depth from 1.5m to 3.5m. The pre-boring process was essential to facilitate advancement of the vibro probe through the dense heterogeneous made ground, ensuring accurate placement of each column and consistent performance across the entire site.
The works were carefully programmed across two phased visits, allowing the team to maintain operational efficiency while minimising disruption to the ongoing construction activities. Throughout the installation process, the team monitored column integrity and site conditions to ensure that the ground improvement achieved the specified compaction and load-bearing requirements.
