SPI Piling Ltd, was engaged by MJCBS Ltd to support the redevelopment of the McDonald’s Longwell Green site in Bristol. The project involved widening the drive-through lane to improve customer flow as part of a larger refurbishment programme. SPI’s role was to deliver a permanent steel sheet piled retaining wall that would support new hardstanding and re-profiled ground levels within a busy, live retail environment.
The scope of works included installing 53 GU23N sheet piles at 5.5m, achieving a retained height of 1.775m, along with pre-augering, pile installation using a 35t side grip rig, impact driving where needed, and fitting a folded steel capping beam. SPI’s involvement was sequenced ahead of drainage and surfacing trades to maintain programme continuity.
Execution involved specialist plant including a Kobelco SK350 excavator configured for augering and vibro installation, supplemented by a BSP DX25 hammer for final toe driving. Pre-augering reduced ground resistance and vibration. Verticality checks, controlled sequencing, and protective measures ensured accuracy and safety. Five live services crossed the pile line; each was exposed, protected and, where necessary, piles were clutch-welded to prevent drop risk.
Safety and quality were managed through a project-specific Method Statement, Lift Plan, permits for breaking ground and hot works, daily plant checks, and strict public segregation. Installation records and compliance with Specification for Highway Works standards ensured quality assurance throughout.
Key challenges included working beside an operational restaurant, coordination around restricted space, and managing multiple live services. Collaboration with the principal contractor enabled risk mitigation without delaying the programme. Flexible methodology—using pre-augering, vibro driving and impact options—helped address variable ground conditions.
SPI Piling Ltd, completed all works on time, providing a robust and compliant retaining solution that enabled subsequent trades to progress without disruption. The project demonstrated SPI’s strengths in technical delivery, safe operations, collaborative planning, and effective service management.
