SPI Piling Ltd, was appointed by Ground Construction Ltd to deliver temporary and sacrificial sheet piling for the redevelopment works at Paddington Green Police Station, part of the wider Trillium project at 2–4 Harrow Road, London. The objective was to provide a safe, low‑vibration solution suitable for a constrained urban environment and to support deep basement excavation while protecting nearby structures and maintaining programme certainty.
SPI Piling Ltd's scope included the design, supply and installation of GU21N sheet piles across two work zones (Block I and Block K). Pile lengths ranged from 7–10.5m in Block I and 8–9.5m in Block K, with programme durations of 2 weeks and 2.5 weeks respectively. Works involved pre‑augering, water jetting, welding, pile cutting and coordination of temporary works.
To minimise noise and vibration, SPI Piling Ltd, deployed a WP150 hydraulic silent press-in rig, installing piles in controlled 900mm cycles. Pre‑augering reduced resistance, and a reaction stand with kentledge supported the initial press-in sequence. Real‑time monitoring ensured verticality and compliance with design requirements. All lifting operations were performed under approved Lift Plans.
Safety and quality were tightly controlled through detailed RAMS, permits (Break Ground, Load, Hot Works), CPCS‑certified lifting teams, daily briefings and plant inspections. Quality assurance included installation records, verticality checks and submission of as-built documentation within one week of completion.
Challenges included operating within a restricted city-centre site, working around multiple crane movements, navigating platform load limits and managing obstructions. Collaborative planning with Ground Construction Ltd ensured segregation of lifting operations and safe coordination with tower cranes.
SPI Piling Ltd, completed both phases safely, on programme and without incidents. The silent press-in method reduced environmental impact and protected neighbouring assets. The project highlighted SPI’s expertise in urban, vibration‑sensitive piling, strong temporary works coordination and effective integration with principal contractors
