Project Capella, Cambridge

As part of a new £79 million research facility for the university of Cambridge, at there Addenbrooke's hospital site, SPI Piling Ltd were employed to install sheet piling and temporary framing for the basement of the building.
The work involved installing 362 L628 sheet piles varying in length from 9 metres - 11.5 metres with a combination of ABI Telescopic Leader Rig and Tosa Stillworker installation.
On completion of the piling works a temporary steel frame was installed to allow the basement to be excavated to formation, and the concrete base slabs constructed.
The frame consisted of four 31 metre long 1067 mm diameter tubes along with perimeter wailings consisting of 610 x 305 and 915 - 305 beams as well as a variety of diagonal braces, total weight of the frame was 180 tonnes.
