SPI Piling Ltd, were engaged by Balfour Beatty for the Installation of steel sheet piles acting as permanent retaining walls, within the existing river banks, and water courses, as part of a new Drainage Board outfall structure at Islington Pumping Station, Nr Kings Lynn.

A large amount of work had already been undertaken on the scheme by Balfour Beatty during the construction of the Pumping station which is set to replace an existing dated structure, now not capable of dealing with the flows encountered in recent times.

The site itself was extremely complicated, in so far as the site was heavily congested with existing construction works, limiting the available working space to SPI Piling. As such, SPI worked very closely with Balfour Beatty project teams to plan and schedule the work in various phases to allow completion. A number of different methods were also utilised, in order to minimise the amount of enabling works required by Balfour Beatty, which included the installation of temporary works at the start of the works to provide a single working area for the first phases of installation.

SPI Piling provided, design, supply and installation services to Balfour Beatty. The installation works were undertaken, by ABI Leader rigs, TOSA Still Worker, and conventional methods owed to the varied access restrictions against the river.
