Overview

River Eden Viaduct, Carlisle

The Contract involved installing sheet piles around existing rail viaduct abutments to act as external shutters for a concrete surround to the abutments, which had suffered from scouring during the floods in Carlisle. The piles were installed using a SP50F Movax attachment mounted on a 23T excavator, which was the largest machine that could access the site over a weight restricted bridge.

All the piling was carried out from a causeway constructed by Story Contracting, which had to be rebuilt several times over the course of the contract following ongoing flood events.
