M6 / M58 Orrell Footbridge, Wigan for Highways England

Works for Highways England (Area 10) on the M6 / M58 / A577 slip-road at Wigan will soon conclude. The ‘Orrell Footbridge’ provided a public footpath access across the A577 slip-road at J26 of the M58 / M6, near Orrell Wigan but had to be demolished after being hit by an HGV. 

This scheme was for the provision of a new footbridge with wheelchair access ramps to reconnect the local community. The works involved the provision and installation of a new single span steel truss footbridge over the slip road and construction of reinforced earth approach ramps. The works also included site clearance, demolition/removal of existing foundations, earthworks, new RC foundations including micro piles, installation of steel parapets, steel handrails, surfacing, and all associated drainage works.
