Proving Our Worth

SPI McGrattan are doing exceptionally well in Scotland. Our portfolio of projects being carried out by our Scottish region include the St. Ola Pier reconstruction and redevelopment project at Scrabster Harbour. The project, at Britain’s most northern mainland port, is progressing really well with installation of sheet and tubular piled combi walls ongoing as part of the redevelopment of the pier.

SPI McGrattan are also engaged in the installation of steel sheet piling for the Hawick Flood Protection Scheme and have now commenced the first sections of work on site on behalf of client Scottish Borders Council. Hawick has an unenviable record when it comes to flooding as the town has experienced damaging flood events stretching back many centuries. The River Teviot, which flows through the town, has burst its banks on at least 15 occasions in recorded history posing risk to life and property.The aim of the £88m project is to provide Hawick with modern, effective and environmentally friendly flood defences which fully address the risks facing the town and are capable of protecting local people, properties, businesses and wildlife for many years to come. SPI McGrattan are currently on site carrying out the installation of 6.5m long AZ18 steel sheet piles adjacent to Albert Bridge in the town centre. Our ABI 13/16SL Leader Rig fitted with a 20VV variable moment variable frequency hammer attachment is really showing its power and capabilities in challenging ground conditions. In total the flood defences will be approximately 6km long making this one of the largest flood protection schemes ever carried out in the UK. It is estimated that, once complete, 970 buildings in the town currently under threat from flooding will be protected. We are delighted to be the PILING CONTRACTOR OF CHOICE on this critical project working alongside Principal Contractor McLaughlin & Harvey delivering vital flood protection in the Scottish Borders.

SPI McGrattan also have completed works on the following projects;

On the Isle of Bute we were tasked with installing steel tubular piles to form the foundations for the temporary slipway at Colintraive Ferry Terminal. The works were made interesting by the requirement to work within the ever changing, both in time and height, tidal window.

We were also engaged to provide sheet and tubular steel piles to form a new quay wall around the footprint of the existing pier as part of the new development at Kyleakin Feed Mill.

SPI McGrattan provided temporary works at Glasgow Airport Investment Area to allow for the main construction for the project which will deliver the infrastructure and environmental improvements to facilitate a world class business and commercial location in the heart of Renfrewshire, connected by air, sea and land. Cofferdams were used to enable the main contractor Wills Bros Civil Engineering to build the two main bridge abutments to the new highways bridge piers at Wright Street Bridge.

We have recently been awarded the contract for Stockingfield Junction and are commencing works on the permanent sheet piled retaining walls to the canal/ towpath boundaries and abutments to the new link construction. The development of the Stockingfield foot and cycle bridge will represent a significant active travel improvement on the Forth & Clyde Canal. It will provide an important new linkage between the communities of Ruchill, Gilshochill and Maryhill improving access and opening up routes to the leisure and employment opportunities in the west end and city centre. The bridge itself will be of a curved design with a viewing platform. The main foundation pile will be on the east bank at Ruchil sweeping north to Gilshochill and south to Maryhill. CGI images of the bridge design can be seen below.

The new crossing will allow pedestrians and cyclists to cross the canal at towpath level rather than having to exit the towpath to use a potentially dangerous road tunnel, before re-joining the canal towpath again. Scottish Canals expect that the increased access to the green and blue spaces of the canal in North Glasgow will boost recreational activity in the area. Further landscaping and the artistic style of the bridge will create a prominent structure in the area which will provide increased access for walkers, runners and cyclists.

We work on projects all over the UK and are regarded as one of the leading specialist steel piling company by far, that is why we are the
