A E Yates Civil Engineering are committed to offering employment opportunities to local people in Salford, so we partnered with Anne Harry who leads Salford City Council’s care leaver programme to offer a careers site visit to young people who are currently in care.
Firstly, we presented to the young people and shared a history of A E Yates Civil Engineering and showed our projects and explained the different roles in our company. We then gave the young people an ice breaker which involved matching a job title to the job description to the salary (all salaries were taken from the GOV.UK website). This gave the young people a better understanding of what job they might want to do.

Jordan Burns (Project Manager) & Saffron Ramsey (Marketing & Social Value Manager) took the young people to our Chapel Street project. Jordan explained the different technical aspects of the project and we pointed out different job roles that were on site.
After this, we took the young people back into the office and gave them another activity which was building a bridge out of K’NEX as a team, we then provided lunch and then asked the young people to fill out a form of interest if they were interested in a paid work experience placement with us.
We have since offered 1 paid work experience (2 weeks) which will be a Labourer role with the opportunity for a permanent role if the work experience placement is successful.
We are also going to try and provide another young person from the group some in office work experience due to them being 16 years old, as there is a minimum age requirement for site work being 18 years old at A E Yates Civil Engineering.
