The A590 Cross-a-Moor Roundabout project was delivered through our National Highways Scheme Delivery Framework (SDF) from August 2021 to June 2022. A.E.Yates are the SDF General Civil Engineering Framework Partner for the NW of England. While the scheme was delivered by National Highways, this was a collaborative venture between with Cumbria County Council, South Lakes District Council, and Cumbria LEP.
The scheme was located to the south of Ulverston on the A590 at a staggered junction locally known as Cross-a-Moor. The scheme replaced the existing junction with a new four-arm roundabout and link roads. The purpose of the scheme was to improve traffic flows, reduce congestion, and improve safety as well as providing infrastructure to facilitate the building of over 1000 new homes.
The A590 is the heavily trafficked main route between the M6 and Barrow-in-Furness with over 19,00 vehicle trips per day between Ulverston and Barrow; complex traffic management schemes were essential to ensure disruption was kept to a minimum. Closures for final surfacing activities were unavoidable but these were minimised and access for residents was maintained at all times. The works were phased to ensure that as much ‘off-line’ works were constructed first in order to avoid disruption to the travelling public. These off-line works included the construction of a new wetland area to ease flooding in Swarthmoor whilst also creating a pedestrian footpath and seating areas around the wetland area creating a beautiful recreational site for the local community. Bio-diversity was improved by planting a variety of species including native hedgerows around the wetland area and site boundaries in general.
Dedication to Health, Safety and Wellbeing was celebrated through the presentation of 8 safety awards to the Workforce, with the A.E.Yates team using this initiative to share HS&W best practice with our framework partners and throughout our supply chain. 1500 safety observations, positive and negative, were raised by the workforce with the A.E.Yates site team contributed 122,731 injury free hours.
A.E.Yates are proud to have been instrumental in the delivery of this scheme which in addition to providing much needed traffic congestion relief also leaves a lasting legacy.
