A.E. Yates Group
A E Yates Ltd is the original and leading company in the A E Yates Group of companies. It was formed in 1870 as a general civil engineering contracting business. The company was purchased by Jack Whitehead (the father of the current Chairman) in 1946 and was incorporated in 1947. A E Yates Ltd developed as a civil engineering contractor working for local authorities, water companies and developers and is now a major regional player in the heavy civil engineering market.
More than Heavy Civil Engineering
We at A E Yates Ltd broadened our area of work from the heavy civil engineering works we were known for and added small diameter tunnelling to the services we offered. The expansion into the A E Yates Group started in 1995 with the formation of A E Yates Microtunnelling Ltd as a separate company. This company later changed its name to A E Yates Trenchless Solutions Ltd in 2004 to reflect the increasingly varied types of trenchless work that company could now undertake. As well as traditional Microtunnelling and Pipe Jacking we also could offer Horizontal Directional Drilling, Auger Boring and other types of trenchless work.
A E Yates Group Structure
The structure changed so that A E Yates Ltd did, and still does, work as a civil engineering company, mainly (but not exclusively) in the Northwest on a main contractor basis. We recognised that tunnelling was nationwide and offered to a different type of client and so A E Yates Trenchless Solutions Ltd became the first of our specialist subcontractor businesses.
Steel Pile Installation Ltd was acquired through its purchase from its founder Eric Livermore in 2006 to increase the presence of the group in specialist subcontract areas. SPI is one of the leading sheet piling contractors.
In order to further widen the range of specialist geotechnical services offered by the A E Yates Group, Yates also purchased 75% of Tritech Ground Engineering to give the group a presence in the bearing pile market. Then In 2011 A E Yates Ltd set up Combined Soil Stabilisation Ltd to undertake soil improvement and stabilisation work.
Further expansion of the A E Yates Group
The merger of Steel Pile Installations Limited and Appleton Piling Limited in September 2012 has increased the scope of works we are able to offer the steel piling market. The merged company will be known as SPI Piling Limited. As well as telescopic rig and conventional work, SPI Piling Ltd now has more expertise in the silent piling and basement markets, particularly in London and the southeast.
At the end of September 2012 the A E Yates Group expanded even further with the addition of rail contracting company APB Construction UK Limited. Specialising in surface preparation, the application of protective coatings, steelwork fabrication and civil engineering works APB Construction UK Ltd. holds a Principal Contractors Licence for Network Rail work.
One Stop Shop offering Underground Construction Techniques
The purpose of building the A E Yates group has been to provide our clients with a "one stop shop" where we can offer all the underground construction techniques usually required for any construction project from the one source.
The individual group companies will undertake work in their individual specialisms as subcontractor or main contractor or will combine to offer clients schemes where the use of two or more Group Specialists removes the risk to the main contractor of the interface between other suppliers.
Our aim is to bring the quality and safety attitudes of the main contracting business to the subcontract work and to that end all our companies are accredited to ISO 9001, 14001 and 18001 where relevant.
